Types of Rocker Switch


Rocker switches come in various types and configurations to suit different electrical and electronic applications. These types can be categorized based on their specific switching functions and the number of poles and throws they have. Here are some common types of rocker switches:


1. Single-Pole Single-Throw (SPST) Rocker Switch: SPST rocker switches have two terminals and act as simple on-off switches. They are commonly used for basic on/off functions. When the rocker is pressed in one direction, it closes the circuit, and when it's pressed in the other direction, it opens the circuit.

2. Single-Pole Double-Throw (SPDT) Rocker Switch: SPDT rocker switches have three terminals and can switch between two different circuits or states. When the rocker is pressed in one direction, it connects one terminal to the common terminal, and when pressed in the other direction, it connects the other terminal to the common terminal.

3. Double-Pole Single-Throw (DPST) Rocker Switch: DPST rocker switches have four terminals and function as two independent SPST switches operated by the same actuator. They are often used when two separate circuits need to be turned on or off simultaneously.

4. Double-Pole Double-Throw (DPDT) Rocker Switch: DPDT rocker switches have six terminals and can switch between two different circuits or states independently. They are versatile switches used in applications where two separate functions or circuits need to be controlled.

5. Illuminated Rocker Switch: These rocker switches have a built-in indicator, such as an LED, that illuminates when the switch is turned on. This provides visual feedback about the switch's status, making them useful in low-light conditions. They can be SPST, SPDT, DPST, or DPDT switches with illumination.

6. Momentary Rocker Switch: Unlike the typical latching rocker switches that stay in the on or off position until manually changed, momentary rocker switches return to their default position when released. They are often used for functions that require momentary activation, such as push-to-talk applications.

7. Waterproof Rocker Switch: These switches are designed to resist water and moisture ingress. They often have a rubber or silicone seal around the actuator to protect the internal components from environmental factors. Waterproof rocker switches are used in marine, automotive, and outdoor applications.

8. Sealed Rocker Switch: Sealed rocker switches are designed to prevent dust and debris from entering the switch, making them suitable for harsh environments. They are often used in industrial and outdoor applications.

9. Rocker Switch with Safety Cover: Some rocker switches come with a hinged or transparent cover that can be closed to prevent accidental operation. These switches are used in applications where safety and prevention of accidental actuation are critical.

10. Rocker Switch with Multiple Positions: These switches have multiple on/off positions, allowing users to select from several settings. They are commonly used in devices with multiple operating modes or settings, such as fans with different speed options.

11. Motor Reversing Rocker Switch: Motor reversing rocker switches are used to control the direction of motor rotation in devices like winches, hoists, and electric motors. They typically have a DPDT configuration.

12. Locking Rocker Switch: Locking rocker switches have a mechanism that allows users to lock the switch in the on or off position to prevent accidental changes.
